In a world filled with problems, we have corruption, discrimination,
gender equality, and many more. Nevertheless, there is one minor problem that
our minds have swept away, and that is “Mining”. So what is mining?
Rocks that contain minerals are called ore. Mining is the process
of digging to
find ore. If the ore is close to the surface, miners can create an open-pit
mine. First, they scrape away
the soil on the surface to get to the ore underneath. Then they use explosives
such as dynamite, or special power tools, to break the ore into chunks. The ore
is sent to a place called a refinery, where people separate the useful minerals
from the rock. So why do
we actually need to mine all this minerals? If we can preserve them even more. Mining is a moneymaking business. Not only do mining
companies prosper, but governments also make money from revenues. Workers
also receive income and benefits.
As we, all know mining is one minor yet at the same time, a major
problem. Mining also comes with pros and its cons. Starting with its
advantages. The different provincial economies are supported by mining in
addition to providing jobs. Mining companies have improved the quality of life
for local residents in the towns where they operate by constructing schools,
clinics, and other social infrastructure, including roads and housing for
staff. Similar to mining, exports from the industry help the nation gain
foreign currency. Additionally, the sector gives the government extra money
through taxes and fees collected from mining and other associated operations.
As far as the disadvantages go. Whether it is a large-scale industrial mining
or little artisanal mining, mining is still a hazardous industry. In addition
to accidents, exposure to dust and pollutants, stress from the work
environment, and management demands all contribute to a variety of ailments
that miners are susceptible to. Across the world,
mining contributes to erosion, sinkholes, deforestation, loss of biodiversity,
significant use of water resources, dammed rivers and ponded waters, wastewater
disposal issues, acid mine drainage and contamination of soil, ground and
surface water, all of which can lead to health issues.
As a student, you could only do so much as far as government standings are. Speaking up about this topic could help the others see a different perspective about mining, whether or not this is something like an advantage or it can lead to its downfall. However, at the end of the day, we could only do so much, but speaking your ground is a definite option.
